Lovemarks

The assignment in 3D Game Lab that I’m doing for my Hum 101 Class is called Love marks. What is a lovemark, well it’s a brand that people connect to on a strong emotional level and buy without a second thought as to why they are so in love with the product. Some big name examples of very popular lovemarks are Apple, Harley-Davidson, and Starbucks. If you want more information on lovemarks check out this link to the Frontline documentary The Persuaders and then look at chapter two. The assignment asks us to explore a lovemark we have and what role it has played in are life.

The lovemark that I can remember having for most of my life is Dr Pepper. I don’t exactly remember the first time I had a Dr Pepper but I know it was early in my childhood. Ever since then it has been my favorite of the soda products out there and let’s face it there is a ton of them. For me there was nothing better than an ice cold bottle of Dr Pepper on a super-hot day in Las Vegas when I was growing up. The unique flavor of Dr Pepper is what has kept me coming back to it year after year and even know they have put out different flavors like adding cherry or vanilla it to, it’s just the good old original for me.

When I was stationed at Fort Hood, Texas, me and my wife use to drive up to Waco, Texas a few times a month, for her the trip was to the zoo and shopping but for me it was the chance to go to the Dr Pepper Museum. The Museum is housed in the Morrison's Old Corner Drug Store in Waco where in 1885 Charles Alderton, a pharmacist working at the drug store, invented the drink making it the oldest major soft drink in the United States. As you can imagine for me a certified Dr Pepper nut the first time I stepped foot in the build I was nearly crawling out of my skin. The place had it all for me, the well that they used to make the first glass of Dr Pepper to some of the original advertisements, and everything in between and all of it was part of my lovemark. One day I will drag my wife back to Waco and get to hang out in the spot where a product was created that has been a part of my life for many years and hopefully many more.

Dr Pepper is now a part of the Dr Pepper Snapple Group and according their website their mission as a company is: To be thebest beverage business in the Americas. They also have a whole section about the values they stand for, like Let’s Play a program partnered with KaBoom! To help build or fix up 2,000 playgrounds to help kids stay active. I think the goals they are trying to reach by helping kids and the communities they live in is pretty honorable for a company and I might just buy another bottle to help out. I’m sure Charles Alderton would be proud and maybe a little shocked at what his soda flavor has turned in to over the last 125 years.

Dr Pepper has been there for many phases and experiences in my life, taking a cold drink of it brings some stability and calmness to my life, and for a moment it makes me think of the days gone past and all the fun I have had in my life with good friends, family, and a great drink.

  1. Yes I agree nothing is as good as the original Dr Pepper. Did you ever try Doc Holiday? When it was around for a brief moment I enjoyed it.

  2. I can understand your devotion to Dr. Pepper. When I first started to like it I wondered why I have been drinking it more that I have. I must say I was surprised how good it was. I originally suspected that it had a flavor like Coca Cola or Pepsi, but I was very wrong.
